Valentine fun fact #1: The man behind the name, St. Valentine himself, went up against the Roman Emperor in the 3rd century AD by marrying couples against the law. The Emperor wanted his soldiers to remain single in order to fight at a moment’s notice when the empire needed them, and so forbade his soldiers from marrying as he believed a single soldier would be more devoted to the empire. Valentine, (who was only a priest at this stage, not a saint yet!) was a bit of a rebel by all accounts, and didn’t agree with the Emperor’s tough stance on romance. He married young couples under the radar so to speak, and was ultimately tortured, and beheaded for his trouble!
Valentine fun fact #2: The most popular flower given on Valentine’s Day is the rose (I know, big surprise there!). Over 50% of flowers purchased for Valentine’s Day are red roses. Next in order of popularity are carnations, and then lilies.
Valentine fun fact #3: More than a billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged in the U.S. alone each year. (This must make the post office very happy, at any rate!)
